Year 4

Blue Class  Term 1

Teacher: Ms Pottinger

During this term, we will be looking closely at the features of newspaper reports and will write an article of our own based on an event at school. The book we will be closely looking at this term will be ‘The Polar Express’ by Chris Van Allsburg, which has links to our geography and science topics and also has a Christmas theme. As always, we encourage reading at home at least 5 times a week, if you can spare time to read with your child it will be of great benefit to them.

We will continue to practice spelling in school but you will also be able to access the Year 3 and 4 statutory spelling lists on the school website and there will also be homework tasks set.

Firstly this term we will be looking at measurement and length and learning how to find the perimeter of rectangular shapes in centimetres and meters. Later on in the term the children will begin working on multiplication and division as well as continuing to practice their timetables using the counting stick method.

It would be helpful if you could encourage your children to practice their times tables at home. The National Curriculum expects all children to leave Year 4 knowing all multiplication facts up to 12 x 12. The school has a new Timetables Rockstars computer game where children can compete with themselves and their class mates to learn their timestables. All children have been given a login that was sent home in term 1.

Foundation Subjects

Our Learning Journey this term will be ‘How do we affect global warming’. This topic involves us looking at life in Antarctica. We will be exploring the wildlife, discussing the countries in this area and looking at what everyday life is like. Our Science topic will be ‘solids, liquids and gases’ which fits in nicely with our main learning journey. It would be great if you could support your child at home by encouraging them to research information or collect books from the library.

RE- Christianity - Forgiveness

We will be reading the story of Joseph and every child will be given the opportunity to link this story in creating a prayer related to forgiveness in our school community.
