Year 4

Blue Class

Teacher: Mr Scrivener

During term 2, we will be looking closely at the features of newspaper reports and write one based on our trip to Battle Abbey. The book we will be closely looking at this term will be ‘The Polar Express’, which has links to our geography and science topics and also has a Christmas theme. Spellings will continue to be brought home as part of homework, given on a Friday and to be returned any day the following week.

As always, we encourage reading to be continued at home, and if you can spare time to read with your child it will be of great benefit to them, they will receive a raffle ticket for every read.

We have finished reading for pleasure Roald Dahl 'Esio Trot' and are now about to read 'Danny the Champion of the World.' Your child may of course bring their copy to school to follow as I read.

Even though your child is now in Year 4, please try to read with your child as often as possible and encourage them to read daily!

This term we will be using our understanding of place value to count in multiples of 6, 7, 9, 25 and 1000; and count backwards through zero to include negative numbers. We will also be looking at finding the perimeter of shapes in both metres and centimetres. Later on in the term, the children will be introduced to fractions. We will be discussing what fractions are and exploring families of common equivalent fractions. It would be helpful if you could encourage your children to practice their times tables at home. The National Curriculum expects all children to leave Year 4 knowing all multiplication facts up to 12 x 12. This website is very useful, we have been playing it in class and the children have been trying to beat their own scores!

It would be really helpful if you could encourage your child to recall their times tables regularly! Also... do play EDUCATION CITY at home, it's great!!!

Foundation Subjects

Our Learning Journey this term ‘Beyond the Magic Kingdom – what is the Sunshine State really like?’ We will compare the environment of North America with our own, exploring their climate, natural disasters and the conservation of their environment.

Our Science topic will be ‘Solids, liquids and gases’. It would be great if you could support your child at home by encouraging them to research information or collect books from the library.
