Teacher: Mrs Bryant
As part of our Kings and Queens topic the children will be encouraged to engage within a number of activities relating to many fictional Kings and Queens. During the term we will be reading ‘The Queen’s Hat’ and ‘The Princess and the White Bear King’. Poetry will also be read, acted out and created by the children. They will be encouraged to think creatively about the rules they would decide if they were the King or the Queen. The children will also learn about Queen Victoria’s coronation and write a diary entry in role as the Queen, reflecting on the day’s events.
Throughout the term our Maths focus is all about Numbers! Reading and writing numbers, both in numerals and in words whilst comparing bigger and smaller numbers using the greater and less signs (< >). Partitioning numbers into tens and ones will be explored and we will begin to look at the hundreds. The children will also be furthering their understanding of addition and subtraction, building upon the skills they learnt in year 1 and learning lots of new methods to solve problems!
Your child could explore some of the Maths games on this website to consolidate their learning at home: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/5-7-years/addition-and-subtraction
Learning Journey (cross curricular subjects)
Our learning journey this term will be Kings and Queens. We will be focusing on Queen Victoria. However later on will be comparing Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth 1.
In art we will be focusing on many painting techniques. These will include mixing colours, creating different shades and exploring patterns and textures. We will also be creating our own royal stamps through string printing.
In year 2, we try to promote a love of reading. As a new whole school initiative this year, the children will be rewarded for reading at least 5 times each week. I will be checking the reading books on a Friday and will give each child a ‘raffle ticket’ if they have read 5 times. These tickets will then be entered into a raffle to win a small prize which will be pulled each week in Friday’s assembly.
Please find above some websites for your child to explore their maths skills further.
There are also many SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) games to explore online, some can be found here - https://www.topmarks.co.uk/english-games/5-7-years/words-and-spelling
