Year 1

Orange Class

English

This term the children will be exploring descriptive words and writing their own poems about fireworks and Christmas, which they will then perform to each other. We will read the story ‘I will not ever never eat a tomato’, base our writing around this and link it to our DT topic of food. We will also read ‘The Jolly Postman’ and focus on writing letters. At the end of the term the children will write a letter to someone special! We will use the Letters and Sounds programme daily to continue to develop the children phonics skills.

Maths

The children will learn to count to twenty, forwards and backwards, read and write numbers to 20 in numerals and words and identify one more or one less than a number. They will use the language of equal to, more than, less than, most and least. The children will represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 10, they will read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (-) and equals (=) signs. We will also spend some time recognising and naming common 2-D and 3-D shapes, including rectangles, squares, circles and triangles, cuboids, cubes, pyramids and spheres.

Learning Journey (cross curricular subjects)

Our Learning Journey theme for the term is ‘How does food bring us together?’. This will include the subjects of English, DT, Science and Art. Through our Learning Journey the children will explore where food comes from, discuss why we need a healthy, balanced diet, sample and prepare food, design menus and invitations and write shopping lists. We will end our Learning Journey by making some healthy dishes to share with a group of Sidley’s senior community and perform some of our Nativity songs to them. In Science we will be identifying and naming a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and birds. We will identify animals that are herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. Our Computing work will include learning about how to make and edit a video linked to our Learning Journey.

Our PSHE topic is ‘Celebrating differences’, and includes identifying similarities and differences between each other as well as discussing what bullying is. Year 4 Science Week

17 images

It may sound disgusting, but the children recreated 'Poos from the past' specifically including the diet of the Egyptians and Aztecs. We made these poos and later pretended to be archaeologists, taking it carefully apart to identify the diet of this civilization. A truly messy experiment but it lots of fun! We also rolled tins done an alley and bottles to discover which would roll further. Does weight effect gravity? We found the bottle full of cotton wool and the bottle with only half filled with sand didn't roll very far. However the frozen water bottle and original full water bottle rolled the furthest. Year 4 certainly did enjoy SCIENCE WEEK!!!
